  • Boarding Assistant

    Job Title: Boarding Assistant (1 open position commencing in August 2024)

    Location: St. John’s-Kilmarnock School (SJK)

    Position Summary:

    Our Boarding Residence hosts students from across the world, and we offer all students a safe, stable, and welcoming home – with intentionally designed social and educational programming – while they pursue their studies. Our Boarding Assistants are integral to achieving this vision, as they are the first and last people our students see, both at the beginning and end of the school day and the beginning and end of the school year. Reporting to the Director, Boarding and collaborating with Upper School educators, Student Health Centre Team, and faculty and staff across the School, Boarding Assistants provide the emotional, community, and academic support needed to help our students flourish.

    Start Date: August 2024
    Contract: August 2024 - June 2025

    Specific Responsibilities Include:
    • Live on the residence floor and be responsible for 8-15 boarding residence students
    • Provide regular supervision of residence students on a rotating schedule and as part of daily interactions, including but not limited to: 
      • regular weekday and weeknight
      • occasional weekend shifts
    • Collaborate with the Director of Boarding to plan, organize, and supervise enriching weekend programming;
    • Teaching residence students the “Student Life Curriculum” that focuses on important practical life skills necessary for living in residence and beyond, such as conflict resolution, sleep hygiene, study strategies, and nutrition;
    • Engaging with students in 1:1 wellness check-ins throughout the week; and
    • Becoming a trusted and positive adult influence in the life of residence students.

    Qualifications and Experience:
    • Experience planning, organizing, and leading educational and/or recreational activities
    • Work or volunteer experience in a congregate living setting
    • Work or volunteer experience with high school-aged youth of diverse backgrounds
    • Fluency in English
    • Fluency in Mandarin, French, or another language would be an asset
    • A Bachelor’s degree or college diploma
    • Educational or work experience in any of the following fields would be considered an asset:
      • Child psychology
      • Social work
      • Education
      • International studies
    • Personal qualities:
      • Caring and empathetic
      • Cultural competencies, experience working abroad or with international communities
      • Enthusiastic and innovative
      • Open-minded and receptive to feedback
      • Strong interpersonal communication
      • Well-developed professional judgement and problem-solving abilities

    Our Boarding Residence is located at Resurrection College, across from the University of Waterloo, and is home to up to 50 students from diverse international backgrounds. Our location offers wide access to an exciting range of restaurants, shops, and experiences to our students and residence staff. The Boarding Residence is open all throughout the academic year, with closures during the Winter, March, and Summer breaks.

    Compensation for this ten-month role is a combination of full room and board at the boarding residence as well as a stipend of $22,500. Other student or administrative support positions may also be available, and compensation will be commensurate with experience.

    Position Summary: 
     
    SJK is seeking highly motivated and committed Lower School classroom teachers to fill two roles. The successful candidates will be enthusiastic and innovative teachers who appreciate working in a collaborative environment, dedicated to the highest standards of teaching and learning. The teachers will be responsible for teaching all subject areas apart from French, Physical Education and Health, Music, and Outdoor Education.

    One position will be a full time, indefinite teaching position and the other will be a 10 month maternity leave position.
